Our Hunting and Fishing Decoys
Mallard Decoys
Mallards are the backbone of any duck decoy spread in New Zealand. Other species, such as grey ducks, shovelers, and the occasional teal, will readily land among mallard ducks, making them a versatile option for your kit.
We carry mallard decoy packs in our hunting and fishing decoy range, including both drakes and hens, plus dedicated feeder packs that add a natural, relaxed look to your setup.
Paradise Duck Decoys
Paradise ducks (pūtangitangi) are a uniquely New Zealand game bird, and they respond well to species-specific decoys. Our paradise duck decoy family packs include both the distinctive white-headed hens and darker drakes, giving you a realistic group that draws in passing parries from a distance.
Set your ground paradise decoys on open ground or paddock edges where parries naturally feed and rest. Separating them slightly from your mallard spread tends to work best, as incoming birds will look to land among their own kind.
Motion Decoys
Static spreads have their limits, especially later in the season when birds have been pressured. Motion decoys solve this by adding realistic movement that catches the eye of passing ducks from hundreds of metres away.
Our spinner mallard decoys simulate wing movement and create the impression of landing birds; a strong visual trigger for incoming waterfowl. If you’re browsing duck decoys for sale, adding at least one motion decoy to your kit is well worth the investment.
Predator Decoys
Not every hunting decoy is designed to attract game birds. Owl and magpie predator decoys serve a different purpose, drawing in pest species like magpies and hawks, or acting as confidence decoys within your wider setup.
Placing an owl decoy near your position can provoke aggressive responses from territorial magpies, making it useful for pest control.
Decoy Accessories
A great set of hunting and fishing decoys is only half the equation; you need the gear to transport, deploy, and position them properly. We stock decoy carry bags, field stakes, and telescopic decoy poles for positioning birds at height where they’re visible from a distance.
Investing in decent accessories protects your decoys from damage and cuts your setup time at the pond. You’ll be set up and ready before first light.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many decoys do I need for duck shooting?
There’s no single answer. The number of hunting decoys you need depends on the size of your water and what the birds in your area are used to seeing. For a small farm dam, six to a dozen decoys is often plenty. Larger waterways or open water benefit from spreads of two to four dozen decoys, giving you better visibility and pulling power.
Do goose decoys for sale work in New Zealand?
Canada geese are an established game bird in parts of New Zealand, especially in Canterbury and Southland. If you hunt areas where geese are present, finding quality goose decoys for sale can add to your setup.
Place them separately from your duck spread, as geese tend to group on their own, and incoming birds expect to see that separation. That said, if your area doesn’t hold resident geese, you won’t see much benefit.
When should I replace my decoys?
Decoys are tougher than you’d think, and a well-looked-after set can last many hunting seasons. The main things to watch for are faded paint, cracks in the body, and damaged keels that cause your decoys to sit unnaturally.
However, your older decoys don’t need to be thrown out. Many experienced hunters use worn decoys in the back of the spread or darker corners where colour is less critical, saving the newer, sharper-looking decoys for the prominent positions.
